Ealaín na Gaeltachta

Ceangal | Dolen II Conference is the second gathering of artists and organizations working in theatre in Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh. This conference brings together practitioners from the areas of theatre creation, production, academia policy-making and funding, to create an inclusive platform for a week of panel discussions, keynote addresses and digital theatrical presentations.

 

DAY 1

Arwel Gruffydd, Artistic Director of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru (The Welsh-Language National Theatre of Wales) will give the keynote address for this year's conference entitled "Heriau wrth lywio a chreu rhaglen artistig ar gyfer theatr genedlaethol mewn iaith leiafrifol / The challenges of steering and programming a 'national' theatre in a minoritized language."

Muireann Kelly (Theatre Gu Leor) will be in conversation with Arwel Gruffydd discussing some elements of his keynote address. She will also introduce some of the findings of the first Ceangal Dolen conference hosted in 2019. Questions about Arwel's morning address from the public will be moderated in the latter part of the discussion.

DAY 2

Introduced by Aodh Ó Coileáin, Head of the bord An Taibhdhearc, today's sessions will focus on creative practice from the first idea to reality onstage with case-studies from artist panels from across the three countries.

Introduced by Aodh Ó Coileáin, Head of the bord An Taibhdhearc, today's sessions will focus on creative practice from the first idea to reality onstage with case-studies from artist panels from across the three countries.

Three Irish artists will present some of their most recent work: Darach Mac Con Iomaire, Darach Ó Tuairisg and Marina Ní Dhubháin.

Aodh O Coileáin will moderate a panel discussion.

New Approaches | Artist Perspectives: Scotland:

Scottish artists Mairi Morrison, Elspeth Turner and Dàibhidh Walker will each present about their own work practice and the context of their work.

Muireann Kelly will moderate a panel discussion with the x3 artists.

New Approaches | Artist Perspectives: Wales:

Welsh theatre artists Eddie Ladd, Sarah Lloyd and Melangell Dolma will present some elements of their own work.

Alun Saunders will moderate the session and host the panel discussion with Q&A from the audience.

DAY 3

This session will focus on the influence and outcomes of research and development to promote theatre-making practices amongst minoritised languages of Welsh, Gáidhlig and the Irish language.

What can we do together?

Muireann Kelly (Speaker) Artistic Director, Theatre Gu Leòr in discussion with Irish dramaturg Pamela McQueen,Arwel Gruffydd Artistic Director of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru (The Welsh language National Theatre) and Darach Mac Con Iomaire, Irish writer, actor and Director will join the discussion to discuss their experiences of collaborative projects.

This session will cover :New work, what is possible when we do work together? Are there unique opportunities to collaborate even in these current Covid restricted times?How can we as artists working in Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh play to our strengths creatively when working together? What is stopping us? Referencing past collaborative projects,  we will discuss how we could explore potential Ceangal Dolen I & II legacy projects and future collaborations.

Guiding Principles - Best Practice

This session is an opportunity for all those working in the theatre sector working in these three minoritized languages to discuss the guidelines and definite action points in the ‘Guiding Principles’ – led by representatives from all three countries with industry representatives from Monday’s closed session.
